A welder qualification test is a process of evaluating a welders ability to make welds to an industry standard (such as AWS, ASME, API) utilizing a welding procedure, commonly referred to as a WPS. General workmanship is critiqued during this test, ensuring the welder is capable of making sound welds during the manufacturing phase of your project.
Performance Qualification Testing is a series of tests used to validate a welding procedure complies to an industry standard or code, such as AWS, ASME, and API. These tests results are summarized on a Procedure Qualification Record, commonly referred to as a PQR. This document is a supporting document to your company's Welding Procedure Specification and is used as evidence your company has passed the codes required series of destructive testing. Common tests for procedure qualification are (but not limited to): bend testing, tensile testing, toughness testing, hardness testing, and nick-break testing.
A welding procedure is an important document that provides detailed instructions on how a particular welding job should be performed. It outlines the procedures, parameters, and requirements that the welder must follow to ensure that the welds meet both the technical standards and any applicable construction codes or customer specifications. This document serves to ensure consistency, repeatability, and guides welders to produce high-quality, defect-free weldments.
